Certicom Corp. holds a large portfolio of patents for ECC, some of which are essential to certain implementations of TLS and IKE. Certicom would like to assure the community that they can implement these protocols without fear of patent infringement. By providing licenses Certicom hopes to clear the way for wide-spread adoption and proliferation of elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) technology in the market place. Most Recent IP Contribution Certicom has licensed the patents listed in the Certicom IETF Contribution Letter, October, 2008 for use with the ECC options in two protocols: - The Transport Layer Security protocol (TLS), which is the IETF equivalent of the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol, and;
- The Internet Key Exchange protocol (IKE), a key exchange and authentication protocol used by IPSec
- The Secure Shell (SSH) Transport Layer Protocol
- The Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME)
