CERTICOM ANNOUNCES MOVIANVPN SUPPORT FOR MICROSOFT® WINDOWS POWERED SMARTPHONE

Enables organizations to easily deploy advanced security to Windows Powered Smartphone

Mississauga, Ontario – (October 22, 2002) – Certicom Corporation (TSX: CIC), a leading provider of wireless security solutions, today announced that it will provide movianVPN support for the newly launched Windows® Powered Smartphone software. The Certicom product was developed in cooperation with Microsoft to provide security for the Smartphone.

movianVPN allows companies to extend critical enterprise applications such as e-mail and customer relationship management (CRM) tools to mobile professionals by enabling handheld devices to connect to corporate VPN gateways for secure wireless access. Security has long been a challenge for the wireless industry, and Certicom’s wireless security solution provides the missing piece to the puzzle.

“The processing power and rich data access capabilities of Microsoft Smartphone means even more data traffic over wireless networks. There’s an immediate need in the wireless industry for a security solution that will protect that information,” said Robbie Wright, Director, Mobile Devices Marketing Group, Microsoft EMEA. “Certicom complements the network infrastructure and Smartphone’s built-in security features with a powerful, secure VPN access solution.”

The Microsoft Windows Powered Smartphone is a highly personalized and powerful mobile phone that gives users the ability to communicate via voice and text and access information when they need it. The Smartphone enables users to surf the Web, access e-mail or use Instant Messenger. This functionality promises to improve the productivity of a mobile workforce – but only if accessing business applications and communicating proprietary information is secure.

“Microsoft’s Smartphone Operating System creates great opportunities for companies to keep their mobile workforce connected and productive,” said, Ian McKinnon, Certicom CEO. “This system is to wireless devices what Windows is to the PC. But this kind of functionality means that security becomes a greater concern. The more information shared, the more risk there is – and at the enterprise level, insecure data can mean insecure revenue. Certicom offers the solution to solve the wireless security issue for enterprises.”

movianVPN from Certicom brings together the convenience of remote access, the mobility of wireless, and the essential security needed for wireless VPNs. This software client provides true end-to-end security from wireless handheld devices to the corporate intranet. movianVPN interoperates with popular VPN gateways and supports the IPSec standard, providing a cost-effective solution for simple integration with existing wired VPN infrastructures.

Certicom will be demonstrating its movianVPN technology at the London, England global launch of the Windows Powered Smartphone on October 22nd. For availability and pricing please contact Certicom.
