FORTRESS TECHNOLOGIES’ CHIEF TECHNICAL ARCHITECT TO SPEAK AT THE CERTICOM ECC CONFERENCE

Annual conference attracts researchers and adopters of cutting edge cryptography

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario – (August 23, 2006) – Certicom Corp. (TSX: CIC) today announced that Magued Barsoum, chief technical architect of Fortress Technologies, a leader in secure wireless networking, will speak at the Certicom ECC Conference on November 14-16 in Toronto, Canada.

Barsoum will speak about Suite B, the suite of cryptographic algorithms recommended by the U.S. Government National Security Agency (NSA) to protect classified and unclassified communications. The intent of Suite B is to standardize on a single set of cryptographic algorithms for the sake of interoperability and information sharing. The only public-key protocols included in Suite B are ECC-based. Fortress Technologies is one of the first companies to launch Suite B-compliant products.

“The NSA notes that there are over a million units of high grade cryptographic equipment that need to be replaced over the next 10 years,” said Barsoum. “The Suite B standard provides a strong security architecture and is clearly the next major step in protecting classified communications for the U.S. and its allies. I appreciate the opportunity to present on this leading-edge topic at this well-established conference.”

“Suite B is redefining the security levels needed to protect government communications. Meanwhile, ECC is found in nearly every major cryptography standard in the world and its adoption continues to grow,” said Dr. Scott Vanstone, Certicom founder and EVP strategic technology. “We are delighted to have Fortress Technologies, a clear leader and innovator in the secure wireless arena, participating in our annual conference.”

ECC is used in a growing number of sectors ranging from consumer electronics, wireless devices and semiconductors to government and financial services. Its implementations are used to protect content, securely transmit data and digitally sign documents. The small size of ECC is a main driver behind its popularity. Backed by 20 years of experience, Certicom is considered a pioneer in ECC research and implementations. The company developed the industry’s first toolkit to include ECC, which has since been adopted by more than 300 organizations.

The Certicom ECC Conference offers a forum for discussing pure mathematics and real-world applications of the cryptography, as well as evolving security standards. The three-day conference is the only one of its kind and attracts cryptography leaders in academia and the security industry from around the world.
