CERTICOM ENABLES ALSTOM ESCA TO PROVIDE SECURE COMMUNICATIONS FOR POWER GENERATING COMPANIES PARTICIPATING IN THE CALIFORNIA ISO

HAYWARD, Calif., August 28, 2001 - Certicom, (Nasdaq: CERT; TSE: CIC), a leading provider of mobile e-business security, today announced that ALSTOM ESCA, the Energy Management and Markets (EMM) Business of ALSTOM (NYSE: ALS), has licensed Certicom's SSL Plus technology in order to provide security for its Internet communications Data Processing Gateway (DPG) software. ALSTOM ESCA is the global leader in providing energy information technology solutions.

"The integration of Certicom's security technology in ALSTOM's software will provide an advanced, secure software infrastructure, enabling companies to conduct safe and reliable transactions across the Internet and other global networks," said JD Hammerly, Vice President of ALSTOM ESCA. "Certicom delivers the high-degree of security necessary to deliver real-time production information," Hammerly added. "We are confident that together, we can deliver the software solution CAISO needs to bring stability to the California market."

By securing ALSTOM's DPG application, Certicom will enable ALSTOM to participate in a critical statewide telemetry project run by the California Independent Systems Operator (CAISO). This data collection project will allow the 300 energy-generating companies across the State of California to communicate directly with CAISO's Energy Management System (EMS), thereby providing information on real-time production availability.

According to the rules and regulations of CAISO's data collection project, all energy-generating facilities in the State of California are required to secure their communications with SSL protocol encryption technology to communicate information between their data processing gateways and CAISO's EMS. By leveraging Certicom's SSL Plus technology, ALSTOM's DPG software will be able to provide superior user authentication and security over the Internet.

"ALSTOM ESCA is one of the leading global companies in the energy market today," said Prakash Panjwani, Vice President of Sales and Business Development for Certicom. "ALSTOM's selection of Certicom's trusted SSL Plus technology reinforces our position as a leading security provider and reflects how Certicom helps it customers meet the specific needs and requirements of their respective vertical markets."
