Wireless data messaging provider uses Certicom's proven, commercial-off-the-shelf technology to strengthen security for mobile devices
MISSISSAUGA, Ontario – (March 28, 2006)–To help meet the stringent security requirements needed to sell to government agencies, Apriva has licensed Certicom's Security Builder GSE, a FIPS 140-2 cryptographic module, Certicom Corp. (TSX: CIC) announced today. Apriva has developed a secure wireless messaging system that supports multi-vendor wireless handheld devices and meets many government directives including the DoD 8100.2 (Department of Defense Directive 8100.2 Use of Commercial Wireless Devices, Services and Technologies) and HSPD-12 (Homeland Security Presidential Directive - 12).
"Apriva's core mission is the development of secure messaging applications including our Sensa Secure Mobile Mail solution. In the development of any product, the classic build-vs.-buy decision is always present for given needs. To rapidly bring Sensa to market, we elected to find a FIPS 140-2 approved cryptographic module versus developing our own and waiting for FIPS approval." said Rich Spinella, VP of government solutions at Apriva. "We chose to work with the Certicom team because their technology is recognized and valued by our government customers."
A Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) Validation assures users that a given technology has passed rigorous testing as set out by the National Institute of Standards for Technology (NIST). By using Certicom Security Builder GSE, application developers and device manufacturers can speed up the process of developing government-approved security products.
The Certicom module will be an integrated component of Apriva's Sensa Secure Mobile Mail solution, which is specifically developed to meet the needs of the U.S. federal government but has applications in other industry sectors. The solution operates on the feature-rich Windows Mobile-based PDAs. Sensa is a full S/MIME hard or soft token PKI-enabled solution and integrates with a smart card reader, also available from Apriva.
"Apriva's Sensa Secure Mobile Mail system gives the Department of Defense and other government agencies many options when choosing a device to meet their mobile email needs. But regardless of the Apriva-supported device they choose, they have the assurance that their valuable assets are secured by Certicom's government-approved technology," said Ian McKinnon, Certicom's president and CEO.
Security Builder GSE acts as a software-based cryptographic provider within the Certicom® Security Architecture™ - a comprehensive, modular and portable platform designed to allow developers to quickly and cost-effectively embed security into applications, and across multiple families and generations of devices. The modular architecture allows the higher level toolkits, SSL, IPSec and PKI to utilize the Security Builder GSE module in FIPS mode. A common application programming interface (API) unifies Certicom's modules to create a plug-and-play security architecture.
